John Walsh is a member of the 3 News Now First Warning weather team.  He brings 19 years of weather forecasting experience from KHAS TV in his hometown of Hastings.    A graduate from Hastings College, John understands all aspects of broadcast journalism after having worked as a voiceover announcer; a news reporter for two years; and a sports reporter/anchor for six years, before taking over the weather department at KHAS in 1997.

Having been honored with a Nebraska Associated Press Broadcasters Association award for Best Weathercast, along with AP and Nebraska Broadcaster Association awards for Best Sports Story, News Feature and Spot News categories, it’s serving the public through his work in severe weather coverage, along with the challenge of understanding the processes that make up Nebraska weather has been the most satisfying to him.   He says his most meaningful ‘award’ was a letter sent to him from a farm family, thanking him for his timely storm coverage which enabled them to remove their grandmother from her mobile home minutes before it was damaged by the storm.

John’s been recognized for his series “Where in the World is John Walsh’ in which he takes viewers across Nebraska to explore little known sights located off the beaten path.  “Honored” is the word he used to describe his association with Children’s Miracle Network, as he represented outstate Nebraska with co-hosting duties during June telethons for Children’s Hospital in Omaha.

When John isn’t working on his forecasts, he enjoys the outdoors and Omaha’s Arts.   He loves skiing, all forms of motor sports, backpacking, sky diving, NFL football, ‘attempting’ to play guitar,  and climbing.  It was during the conclusion of a climb of a prominent 14,000-foot peak in Colorado where he proposed to his wife Susan.  Breathless (because of the thin air, not John) she said yes.  Following their marriage they’ve enjoyed traveling to various places, highlighted by jungle trekking in Malaysia and working at an elephant sanctuary.

John wants to thank everyone for all their support in making him feel welcomed in his transition to Omaha and looks forward to serving everyone in his new hometown.
