Shawnte Passmore joined the 3 News Now team in October 2015 as a Reporter/Multi-media Journalist (MMJ).
A California native, Shawnte previously worked as a reporter, producer and anchor for the award-winning news team at Hawthorne Community Television. Some of her favorite stories include an aviator who dispatches basic necessities to Native American tribes; a hometown hero who went on to become a MMA fighter; and covering athletes competing in the Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles 2015.
She also worked as a freelance reporter/MMJ at Los Angeles Wave, a weekly paper covering the Westside and Southside communities of Los Angeles. With the ability to produce content for print and digital, Shawnte has covered stories highlighting Los Angeles city and county politics, parents fighting for equal access to education and the 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. At The Wave, Shawnte reported, edited, shot still photography, and wrote columns and stories for print and web.
In the spring of 2015, Shawnte participated alongside media partners to focus on the 50th anniversary of the 1965 Watts Riots for a fellowship program, hosted by USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. The assignment showcased how individuals are using vacant lots to bring green spaces and improve access for healthier options in blighted areas while also re-creating economic development. The Huffington Post later cross-posted the stories.
Shawnte is also a member of the National Association of Black Journalists.
She received her Bachelors of Arts in Journalism with a Communication Studies minor from California State University, Long Beach.
In her spare time, she enjoys reading devotionals, dancing, working out, traveling to off-the-beaten-path places, and spending time with family, friends and her cat, Simba. She is looking forward to exploring her new home in Omaha!
