Pride Festival-goers who showed up at the start of Saturday's event had the opportunity to rub elbows with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

While it may have come as a surprise to those who happened upon him in Stinson Park — and certainly gave a boost to the event — his visit to the area makes sense: Zuckerberg has been on a tour of the United States and in the region the past few days, making stops in Iowa just yesterday.

During a stop in Chicago, Zuckerberg said his social media platform is overhauling its mission and focusing on uniting the world.

"And the idea behind our new mission is to bring the world closer," he said in Chicago. "And the new formal mission statement is going to be, 'To give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together.'"

Zuckerberg said the "Facebook Groups" feature helps fulfill the new mission. The groups connect strangers who share interests in order to build meaningful communities on the platform.

Zuckerberg also has business interests in the area, with Facebook announcing in April that it's building a data center in Papillion.
