As progress is made to revitalize Little Italy a local organization is working to make sure the city's history is not compromised.

This week, the Cornish Mansion and Worthington Mansion are approved for the Landmark Heritage Preservation Ordinance by the Omaha City Council.  Both are located near 10th & Williams Streets in Little Italy.

It's another layer of protection to keep the buildings from being torn down if they were sold to a developer.

In the last few years, the Johnston Mortuary building was torn down for a new apartment development to revitalize the area.

"Right now south 10th street is experiencing a lot of development and it's coming under the eye of a lot of developers, it's getting a lot denser.  And it's important that we make sure that these buildings are kept even as the surrounding areas are developed." Brian Whetstone with Restoration Exchange Omaha explained.

Both the Cornish and Worthington mansions are already on the National Register of Historical Places.

The ordinance will take effect on July 5.
