The date was January 14th. Nebraska has just announced the hiring of new defensive coordinator, Bob Diaco.  So as our countdown of the 17 Husker headlines to know for the 2017 seasons nears an end, it's only fitting that our second biggest storyline is about Diaco's defense.

No one saw Diaco's much talked about, new 3-4 defensive scheme in April at the spring game, as the Huskers didn't want to give opponents another scouting tool to utilize.

And while this new style of defense may be new for NU, Diaco's defense has been extremely successful during his time as a college football coach.  In fact, Diaco led Notre Dame to the 2012 national championship game behind the nation's second-best unit in scoring defense.

That same year, Diaco earned the Broyles Award, given to the top assistant coach in all of college football.  So starting September 2nd against Arkansas State, Husker nation will get to see if Diaco can replicate the same sort of success while leading the Blackshirts.
