More than 400 people died on the U.S.S. Oklahoma. Offutt Air Force Base is trying to identify the remains of hundreds of people, including 18 from Nebraska and Iowa.
And now UNO computer science students are helping with that by working on a web-based program to organize data.
The program will streamline the information, helping them connect it with the fallen soldiers. Students and professors say they are excited to work on a project with such a real world impact.
"It's a tremendous project," Hesham Ali, the Dean of the College of Information Science and Technology. "Both in the scientific value, but also emotionally in what it means to the community, the families, the country, the fact that it is a commitment by the country to identify all of the fallen soldiers."
Since, 2015 scientist have identified the remains of 100 crew members from the U.S.S. Oklahoma.
