The 2018 midterm election is still more than a year away, but the race for Congress in Omaha is officially under way.
Former Congressman Brad Ashford kicked off his campaign tonight downtown at The Old Mattress Factory.
Last November, the Democrat lost his seat to Republican Don Bacon.
Ashford also has some competition within his own party. Kara Eastman, the president of Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance, is already in the race for the Democratic nomination and said she believes Washington needs some new faces.
"Well, I'm concerned about some of the decisions that are being made in Washington, D.C., and how they really don't reflect Nebraskan values," Eastman said. Her platform is centered on health care, jobs, education and the environment.
Republican incumbent Don Bacon’s team issued this statement:
"Congressman Bacon is looking forward to discussing the mid-term elections and his re-election campaign after he makes an official announcement.
”Don is focused on continuing to work hard representing the people and interests of Nebraska's second congressional district in Washington, D.C.”
