Record breaking Thanksgiving travel hits Omaha

AAA estimates that 50 million Americans will cram the roads, skies and trains, trying to get to their Thanksgiving destination in time for turkey carving.

The week has a glass-breaking start at Eppley.

This is the busiest travel year the day before Thanksgiving in a decade.

With more than 80 percent of those travelers on roads and highways, there's also an increase in people flying.

That's because of low fuel prices leading to lower ticket prices.

Airports, such as Eppley, have increased capacity to accommodate the expected increase.

“It’s not surprising based on a lot of things we’ve seen recently from the airlines in terms of what they’re offering with nonstop flights and airfare overall,” said Steve McCoy, manager of airline affairs. “

Low fuel prices saved Americans $28 million from 2015 to 2016, said AAA Nebraska.

It’s recommended Omaha fliers arrive at Eppley Airfield an hour and a half before their flights.
