OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) - In this age of selfies, anyone can snap a picture. But capturing a significant moment takes a gift.

One local man was blessed with that gift and won more than 50 awards for his work. Photojournalist Rudy Smith was the first African American employee of the Omaha World-Herald.

His work captured the heart and soul of Omaha and is currently on display at the Great Plains Black History Museum.

"The photo he took of Robert Kennedy, the photo of the ‘69 riots, he has a story that when he took the photo that he almost lost his life in trying to get the photo,” said Eric Ewing, Executive Director of the Great Plains Black History Museum.

Rudy Smith passed away last December but his work lives on at the museum. His widow is holding a book signing of his work at the museum Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
