An uplifting and heartwarming story from a small Nebraska community.
Red Cloud High School girls basketball team is carrying the hopes and dreams of the entire community.
The team finished the regular season 20-and-3 and they are headed to the state tournament this week.
"We had another girl that was contemplating coming out she'd been out the last couple years and we've really tried to encourage her to come out and finally she decided to and she has loved every second of it and she's a huge plus to our team," said Maria Ockinga, a point guard for Red Cloud.
Mike Patterson of the Omaha World-Herald has been covering their journey.
"Nothing has been handed to them all season long," he said.
"The coach told me that the girls are off the court too. National honor society members and they play smart. They are smart in the classroom."
Even more amazing, there are only six girls on their roster.
The team has battled through illness, even stayed out of foul trouble just to have enough players to finish the game.
Red Cloud High School is located about 200 miles from Omaha and south of Hastings.
Red Cloud plays Wynot in the first round, at the state basketball tournament Thursday night in Lincoln.
