Omaha Sports Insider's Grace Yowell sits down with Omaha Westside head football coach Brett Froendt following the Warriors' 48-17 win over Millard South.
Westside's Jaden Kohls rushed 117-yards and scored three touchdowns in just the first quarter Thursday night. Kohls went on to finish with six touchdowns.
"Jaden's due for a breakout, he had a great season last year but we had him in multiple roles and we've kind of put him at I-back this year," Froendt said. "He's so multiple we can put him in different places tougher teams isolate on him, so it was exciting to see him have a breakout game," Froendt said.
Kohls broke the school record for all-purpose yards with 330-yards Thursday night. Not stopping there his six touchdowns tied the single game school record.
"A fantastic night for him (Jaden Kohls) and of course Dylan throwing the ball and our guys up front, they did a great job of maintaining their blocks and blocking down field," Froendt said.
Westside returning quarterback Dylan Plautz is expected to help the Warriors on and off the field this year.
"His leadership has really stepped up this year, his command to the offense is fantastic, his ability to make changes, he's a dynamic young man and a very intelligent young man, we're very lucky to have him," Froendt said.
The Warriors also return wide receiver Caleb Schweigart who has already shown a lot of improvement from last season.
"He's always been a confident kid but his route running has gotten better, him and Dylan have a great chemistry together, he's also become a little bit more poised," Froendt said.
After losing to rival Creighton Prep 45-41 to open the season he said they were pretty concerned about the Warriors defense.
"Our effort was fantastic, our fight was fantastic, but our technique and fundamentals were poor. We spent all week fixing ourselves, even though we were focused on Millard South we still had to fix ourselves," Froendt said.
Froendt said the defense performed much better Thursday night and is looking forward to continue the improvement throughout the season.
The Warriors will continue to focus on making themselves better but not forgetting about their next opponent Omaha South.
"We'll always game plan and work on the next opponent, it doesn't matter who it is, but early in the season we need to fix us and we find everything from there," Froendt said.
