Bitter Cold Settles In

Winter storm later in the week
Posted
and last updated

Colder air blows in overnight as skies will gradually clear. We drop back into the single digits for the start of Tuesday. Although, the wind chills will bring back the bitter cold. It will feel closer to the -5 to-15 range.

While Tuesday will be partly cloudy, highs will only be in the low teens. With a breeze gusting near 20 mph at times, it will feel closer to 5°.

A winter storm then moves in midweek. Wednesday will start dry, but snow will start to move in during the second half of the day as we warm into the teens.

Snow becomes more widespread and intense Wednesday night and into Thursday morning. The wind will also increase by Thursday morning, making for blowing snow and low visibility. It's too early to talk specific details on snow amounts, but we will likely need the snow shovels and snow plows for this one.

Even after the snow ends by Thursday night, strong winds will continue to blow the snow around through Friday, into the air, and back onto cleared roads. This will make for a span on dangerous holiday travel. You will need to plan ahead for delays and detours, whether flying or driving this holiday season.

The strong wind will also be blowing in very cold weather. Thursday starts below zero, and we won't make it above zero in the afternoon.

Friday will start in the negative teens, but as the wind continues to blow, wind chills will range from -30 to -50, slightly worse than Thursday morning. Friday afternoon will bring more sunshine, but highs likely stay below zero for a second day in a row.

There will still be extra wind around Saturday, but it will start to lighten up. This will slow down the flow of cold air, letting us get into the positive single digits for the afternoon with mostly sunny skies.

Christmas will bring less wind and a little less cold. Highs will be in the teens with a small chance for a spotty rain or snow shower.
