The inmate accused of shooting and killing Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Deputy Mark Burbridge has been formally charged.

Wesley Correa-Carmenaty was formally charged Friday with 12 felony charges, including first degree murder, attempted murder, first degree robbery, and felon in possession of a firearm.

Investigators say Carmenaty managed to free himself from his handcuffs when a prisoner transport van arrived back at the Pottawattamie County Jail May 1st after he had been sentenced to 45 years in prison for his role in a 2016 murder. Court documents show Carmenaty attacked Burbridge, got ahold of a deputy's gun and shot Burbridge in the head and Deputy Pat Morgan in the stomach. He then drove through the door of the jail's sallyport, then later tried to carjack Jerry Brittain, shooting him in the neck. Carmenaty later carjacked a woman and drove into Omaha, where he was captured after a chase and crash.

Carmenaty is being held in the Woodbury County Jail in Sioux City. His arraignment is scheduled for June 19th, with a trial date tentatively set for June 25th.
