An Omaha boy is starting the first grade as a BMX World Champion.

Joseph Mather, 6, began riding a bike at age 3, mom Jennifer says. His room is full with dozens of competitive bike riding trophies.

"There's three levels for BMX riders: novice, intermediate, and expert," she explains. "When he became an expert at five, we thought, he's pretty good at this."

BMX, an abbreviation for bicycle motocross, is a cycle sport performed on BMX bikes. In July, Joseph competed in the World Championship and won best in his age group.

"It was hard, but not that hard," he said.

Joseph practices four days a week at a local BMX track.
