Winnebago Tribe member gets probation for casino theft

Former Winnebago council member Lawrence Payer was given five years probation for stealing money from the tribe's casino in Sloan, Iowa by a U.S. district judge in Omaha Monday. 

The judge also told Payer, who previously pleaded guilty to to theft from a gaming establishment on Indian lands, he must pay $36,000 is restitution. 

Additionally, Thomas Snowball, another Winnebago council member pleaded guilty to theft from a gaming establishment on Indian lands Monday. 

According to authorities, Snowball and Payer were two of the nine council members who conspired to steal more than $327,000 tribe's casino
