OMAHA, Neb. ( KMTV) — Drive down 13th Street and you'll see a revitalization happening. As places like the Bohemian Cafe and the Donut Shop close, more shops are opening or revamping. Since 1977, however, one place remains - the Ethnic Sandwich Shop.
The shop is best known for its hot and cold Italian sandwiches.
"If you've been here long enough, everybody knows about Ethnic Sandwich Shop. It's a nice little hidden gem," one customer told 3 News Now.
The restaurant is on its third set of owners, but the taste and building have remained the same, including their small entryway. The tight squeeze inside is part of the location's charm, making it a to-go joint for customers. The venue does include outdoor seating where customers can eat while getting a taste for the neighborhood.
"It's been in the neighborhood for a long time, and it's exciting to see them be incorporated into the development happening here and it's something cheap, fast and good food," said another customer.
Some of their popular subs are the Slammer, the Sparky, and their Italian Meatball sub. Their most popular dish however, is their homemade meatballs, which are bathed in their fresh Marinera sauce, made daily.
Beyond their savory sandwiches, Ethnic Sandwich Shop has sides like soups, salads, and pasta and features a daily special.
Even more appetizing than the food and smell are their prices. You won't find anything on their menu above $10.
