OMAHA, NE — Unemployment insurance claims continued to skyrocket in the U.S. and in Nebraska and Iowa.
The number of claims for the week ending March 28 doubled across the country from the previous week, hitting 6,648,000.
In Nebraska,claims saw a 50% increase from the previous week, hitting a record 24,572.
In Iowa, claims have more than doubled from the beginning of the month, hitting 58,453 at the end of last week, a jump of 17,501 from the previous week.
People continue to lose their jobs as businesses are forced to close or severely cut back due to the ongoing restrictions in place from the coronavirus pandemic.
The governors of Nebraska and Iowa are expected to address the ongoing jump in claims at their news conferences Thursday afternoon. Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts is scheduled to speak at 2 pm and Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds is expected to speak at 2:30. 3 News Now will cover both news conferences live on-air and on our digital platforms.
