Dealing with mask acne

OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — Maskne is causing adults acne problems from wearing a mask.

"If COVID has taught us anything, it is that cleanliness triumphs all," says Adrianna Lugo, Beauty Consultant with Mary Kay.

Maske is not just a cute term, it is a real condition that is being talked about and dealt with by professionals.

"We think that this maskne, that it has been termed, is from occlusion. Some of that is true but a lot of it is just from the friction of the mask rubbing on the skin and it breaks down the skin barrier. We want to make sure we are protecting the skin with some kind of moisturizer," said Dr. Dendy Engelman, a dermatologist with RxSaver.

She says those with oily skin should moisturize as well and that there are great drug store products that can help.

"If you do get breakouts over-the-counter products like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide are great," continued Dr. Engelman.

When you do moisturize, you don't want to over-moisturize, a little goes a long way. Before you moisturize you want to make sure your face is clean.

"The key to selecting a cleanser is you want that deep cleanse without stripping all of the oils out of your face," adds Lugo.

Also, you should avoid touching your face with your hands as much as possible. If the acne is really bad they suggest seeing a dermatologist. Some have virtual appointments.
