A La Vista assisted living complex participated in an awareness and fundraiser events put on by the Alzheimer's Association on the longest day of the year.
Granville Villas Assisted Living is participating in the longest day. The event brings awareness to the disease and help raise money for the cure.
The disease is the No. 6 killer in the U.S. and there are no known preventative measures or a cure, according to Terry Streetman of the Alzheimer's Association's Nebraska chapter.
"Age is the biggest risk factor," he said. "As they're diagnosed, the reality is everyone's Alzheimer's journey is different."
The day also is a nod to caregivers. Claudia Dughman says she's appreciative of the caregivers who watched over her ailing parents.
"They're in a class of their own," she said. "You have to have such a good heart."
