OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — A South Sioux City, Nebraska, girl is defying the odds.
Meet 10-year old Mellany Fernandez. She loves writing stories and is legally blind. She has optic nerve hypoplasia which means her optic nerves aren't fully developed.
Fernandez was just selected as a finalist for the 2020 Braille Challenge Finals.
"My special ed teacher would take me and put in me in a class and practice everyday," Fernandez said. "I read stories, and I have to like find an error, and then I do 40 spelling words."
Fernandez will be competing in the Braille Challenge this Saturday at 12:45 pm.
