OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — As the temperature gets very cold and wind chill is expected over the next couple of days, the Nebraska State Patrol and Nebraska Department of Transportation are urging travelers throughout in Nebraska to be prepared .
The National Weather Service has issued either a Wind Chill Warning or Advisory for nearly half the counties in Nebraska.
“These temperatures and wind chills will be dangerous after just a brief period of exposure,” Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol Colonel John Bolduc said. “It’s important for travelers to be prepared in case they become stranded while on the road. Most importantly: Do not leave your vehicle until help arrives.”
Anyone stranded can call *55 from their cell phone to contact the NSP Highway Helpline. Callers connect directly with an NSP dispatcher who can then send a trooper to the scene to assist the motorist. Motorists are urged to call 911 for any emergency. You can also check the most up-to-date travel conditions by calling the Nebraska’s Advanced Traveler Information System at 511.
NSP says to use well-traveled routes and don't rush. Let others know where you are going, which way you're going and when you will arrive. They say if you become stranded, stay in your vehicle until help arrives. The weather is so bad it can be life-threatening.
NSP also says to keep things like First Aid kit, phone charger, flashlight with extra batteries, blankets and a flashlight in your car.
