Amber Alert suspect arrested on warrant

Omaha police have arrested a man they say stole a car with twin eight-month-old babies in the back.

It was a 90 minute search that lead to an Amber Alert, OPD found the car with the babies inside nearby but the suspect was on the run.

Police were looking for 33-year-old Jacob Barney, and said they arrested him Sunday evening.

“It was an extremely scary incident especially for the mother and the two young children, but this is a guy we wanted off the streets badly and quickly,” said Omaha Police Officer Phil Anson.

Berney had a warrant out for his arrest after court documents show he tried to steal a car just 11 days before the Amber Alert.

Officer Anson said the public helped police get him off the streets.

“We did have a lot of people calling in tips, people that were calling and trying to help us out and get him arrested; finally we were able to get the right phone call where he was located,” said Anson.

Right now Berney is booked on a previous auto theft warrant, plus car theft, and two counts of felony child abuse for this crime.

Records also show a long history with the court system, including jail time for another theft in 2015.

Anson said it will be up to the District Attorney if they want to pursue any more charges.
