A theft suspect is caught in the act. Now authorities are looking into whether he was involved in a rash of crimes.
Quick work by the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office leads to a suspect in Bellevue, and thousands worth of items in his truck.
Dakota Oehm, 22, is charged with felony theft by unlawful taking in Sarpy County Court.
A search warrant says in late February Oehm was caught at the Tregaron Oaks Apartment Complex on Capehart Road near Highway 75. His truck was loaded with numerous stolen power tools, a space heater, backpacks and bags, and a GPS. Authorities believe he was breaking into cars and throwing the stuff in his truck. He was taken into custody after a short foot chase.
The search warrant also indicates that since December 2015 there have been numerous thefts from Tregaron Oaks Apartments, and Colonial Pointe Apartments off Highway 75 and Fairview Road.
Jon Hollister's 16-year-old daughter had her backpack stolen from her aunt's hatchback at the complex and says he doesn't understand why someone would steal the backpack, or feel like they need to steal in general.
"Why do you want to do something like that? Is it easy money, is it easy something else? And you can't do it that way. Life is tough life is tough for everybody, but this is not the answer," Hollister explained.
The 22-year-old has been convicted of DUI, leaving an accident, and tampering with an interlock device.
Oehm was released from jail on his own recognizance in the theft case.
