Thanks to a few watchful eyes, a man is not scammed out of $850.

On Monday, a man--whom wished to not be identified--recevied a call explaining that he missed jury duty and he has to pay $850.

"This just sounded too official you know, they've been too specific about what they want to have done," said the victim.

The scammers directed him to go to a Baker's grocery store and use the re-charge cards to direct the money to them.

"Just load the card, and then once you have it done, come on back out to the vehicle and give me a call and we'll set up an appointment for you to come down," said the victim.

Almost immediately two employees at the Baker's grocery store on 169th and West Center road knew something wasn't right when the victim tried loading money on the card.

"He came in and had very specific instructions about what he was looking for but he wasn't exactly sure what is was he was looking for," said Baker's Customer Service manager Jamie Tietgen.

Tietgen asked questions, the answers indicated it was a scam.

"When he mentioned that it wasn't for a person that he knew or for himself it was paying off the state of Nebraska it raised a big red flag because they don't ask for those," said Tietgen.

The scammer was on the phone with the victim during this whole transaction until he heard from Assistant Store Manager Chris Larsen.

"I know this is a scam--and the guy at the other end of the phone hung up on me," said Larsen.

Thanks to those employees, a scammer didn't get this man's money.

"We came that close to losing 850 dollars," said the victim who has a sharp message to the scammers who put him through this, "You really should find something better and more industrious to do than take advantage of hardworking people that might happen to have a bad day and not thinking clearly. It's just a terrible thing to do and you need to stop".

Larsen said anytime someone calls you to do a money transfer over the phone, hang up immediately. Larsen said he's seeing more of these types of scams and there was another one at his store just a few weeks ago.
