He's something like an overnight success. In the year a Bellevue man first started writing books, he's already become one of the top-selling western authors on amazon.

Just because someone has never been on a horse, doesn't mean they can't write all about it. Retired Air Force Maj. Chris Petit may not have traveled west in the 1800s but he's had to overcome a lot.

Having survived cancer, he was left with little function from his jaw to his chest.

"I had to do something to keep my mind going, but what it turned out to be is a whole new focus," Petit said.

Unable to work, he started a new hobby - reading. But, he didn't find any westerns he liked.

"There was no ending, there was no real relationship," Petit said.

So then this cowboy started writing. At the push of his daughter, he posted some of his stories on amazon for 99 cents.

In the 1 year he's been writing, C.J. Petit has completed 33 novels, made Amazon's best selling western list, and grossed hundreds of thousands of dollars.

To celebrate, he bought himself a laptop.

He's managed to stay humble in his newfound fame, focused on coming up with the next big thing.
