The Better Business Bureau of Nebraska held a press conference Tuesday morning to address evolving fraud in sweepstakes, lottery and prize scams.
In 2017 alone, 500,000 Americans and Canadians lost $117 million in these types of scams.
A majority of the "winners" are those 55 and older and they are contacted in a variety of ways, including pop-up ads, text messages and Facebook messages.
Senior citizens are encouraged to use an "abundance of caution" when accepting prizes online.
