Greyhounds will no longer circle Bluffs Run. The nearly 30-year-old track connected to the Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs ran its final set of races Friday evening.
Crowds had run thin in recent years as interest in dog racing dried up. Casino executives complained the track, which originally allowed them to build gaming facilities in the landlocked section of Council Bluffs, was costing millions. They successfully lobbied the Iowa legislature to allow for the closure.
As part of the deal, the horseshoe will continue to subsidize greyhound owners for the next several years. The dogs will be adopted through rescue organizations.
A large crowd came for the final races. Watch the video and hear from long-time fans.
