Boys Town coach remembers player who died

Boys Town basketball coach Tom Krehbiel describes Larry McBryde as a great teammate and caring young man.

McBryde was found dead in his room at Boys Town on Monday morning.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is investigating how the 18-year-old died. They say there were no signs of struggle or a disturbance in his room. Investigators said an autopsy was scheduled Tuesday.

At Tuesday's game, the Boys Town basketball team beat Wahoo in a close-scoring game. McBryde was a senior starter on the team.

“First and foremost, he was a great teammate, cared about his team, cared about basketball, cared about the people around him, had a great smile, just loved being around basketball and the team,” Krehbiel said.

“He was important to our team and important to our kids. They really struggled with this the last 24 hours, but I think earlier today came to grips with what they had in front of them and are really bonding together. We’re going to go out and play hard and represent our school and Larry and all our families with class tonight."

Wahoo players even put McBryde’s number on the back of their warm-up jerseys.

“Our effort and our attitude and our behavior is dedicated to him. The outcome is the outcome, and Wahoo is awfully good, we’re going to do our best,” said Krehbiel.
