OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — A 33-year-old man was shot in his home near the corner of 26th and Newport Avenue after several bullets were fired at his house, one of which went through the wall of his bedroom.
The man's stepson, Christian Roman, says shortly after 2 am last night, he woke to the sound of gunshots.
“Right away, my first instinct was to run to the window because I wanted to see what was going on if it was an explosion or something like that," Roman said. "When I go, I see this car that was pulling off like right away.”
After seeing the vehicle flee, that was when he realized his stepfather, Felipe Moreno-Lopez, had been shot in the forehead.
“I go and look at him, and there’s a bunch of blood gushing out everywhere and I was like, ‘You can’t mistake that sound. That’s gunshots," Roman said.
Moreno-Lopez was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center, where according to Roman, he is awaiting surgery to have pieces of shrapnel removed.
The family says they don’t know why their house was shot, but now they feel terrified to be in their home.
“We stayed up the whole night just looking behind our backs," Roman said. "My little brothers are scared. They just keep talking. Like that’s a thing that’s going to stay with them for life.”
Roman said he also feels angry, saying this recklessness could have killed his mother or his younger siblings who were lying in the same bed when the gunfire began.
“People over here busting shots and doing crazy things," Roman said. "Like that’s where my mom stays. They could have seriously injured my mom or my little brothers, and that just makes me mad.”
Moreno-Lopez injuries are not life-threatening, and no one else was injured.
