It took a small team to get a 2012 Kia Rio out of Lake Manawa Tuesday morning after police say a driver swerved off the road to avoid hitting a rabbit.

Officers were dispatched at 5:28 a.m. to the intersection of Westlake Road and Northshore Drive.

Enrique Iglesias, 38, told police he was the only occupant in the car when he saw an animal in the road and swerved to avoid hitting it, which caused him to drive into the lake, police say.

He managed to escape before the car submerged in the lake.

For hours, the car sat in the water until Arrow Towing Services could find a break from Tuesday’s weather of lightning and thunder.

Two divers had to secure the vehicle in the water before a tow truck could safely lift it out of the lake.

“It's not just towing the vehicle out of the water,” says Scott Alff with Arrow Towing. “We set up special booms around the car to absorb any oil or anything that may have gotten into the water. We clean up all the debris around there.”

It took an hour for the team to tow and clean-up the area.

No word yet on whether the rabbit was hurt during the incident.
