The Centers for Disease Control is warning of bacteria in public pools, hot tubs and water playgrounds, according to a new report.
The CDC says nearly 500 disease outbreaks in treated recreational water resulted in 27,000 cases of illness and eight deaths between 2000 and 2014.
More than 45 states and Puerto Rico reported the illnesses. Many were linked to hotel pools.
The CDC says, "outbreaks associated with treated recreational water can be caused by pathogens or chemicals. The aquatics sector, public health officials, bathers, and parents of young bathers can take steps to minimize risk for outbreaks."
