Promoting cockfighting or dog fighting landed one man in jail over Labor Day.

The incident happened around 3p.m. September 3rd at 42nd and H Streets. The Nebraska Humane Society said they took away 20 roosters and two dogs from the residence.

According to the Douglas County Department of Corrections inmate indicator, 39-year-old Jose Torres was booked for animal fighting and obstructing a peace officer.

Neighbors around the house were wondering what was going on, “3 or 4 cruisers came by and they were going in and out of the house all night long and then at 6:30 I saw them take their two dogs away,” said neighbor Mary Ann Povondra who saw the roosters being taken away also, “bringing out little carts saw all the chickens and roosters being taken away".

Povondra said Torres has a white Boxer and a German Sheppard but never sees them mistreated, “You never see any commotion over there any abuse or anything like that”.

Mark Langan with the Nebraska Humane Society said he's meeting with the Douglas County Attorney on Tuesday to go over more details in this case.

Torres’ bond is 10-percent of 30-thousand dollars.
