OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — The Global Leadership Group Omaha is committed to keeping North Omaha a place to be proud of. Even during these tumultuous times, that hasn't stopped.

Mowing, weeding, picking up trash, whatever it takes to keep 24th St. in North Omaha a place to be proud of.

"Beautification is the first step toward revitalization, and it is something everybody can get involved in. That is why we encourage community engagement in activities like this," said Lavonya Goodwin, executive director of the group. "Everyone can pick up trash, and everyone really wants a clean, beautified area to live in."

This once vacant lot that was an eyesore is now a community garden. And along with beautification, it's inspiring kids in a whole new way.

"Teaching the kids gardening; some of the stories I have heard, the mom says, 'They won't eat vegetables. Once they learn how to garden, then they start eating vegetables. We make pizzas from the vegetables from the garden, the kids love it,'" said Daniel Goodwin Jr., CEO for the group. "This is just one of multiple ways we are trying to engage the community in a positive way."

They say North Omaha sometimes gets a bad wrap, and they hope to change all that.

"I'm a recent graduate from UNO. I did a lot of community service during my time there," said volunteer Ryan Pfitzer. "This is cool because I can come out, give back, talk with some people and have a good time while I am doing it."

The group has several other programs where they also teach things like financing and life. The Global Leadership Group Omaha does community cleanups once a month.
