The city of Council Bluffs broke ground on its Public Safety Plaza, honoring those who put their lives on the line to protect the public.

Thanks to a donation from Ron and Suzanne Mahoney, four statues of first responders will be on display between Main and Pearl Streets in the old downtown area.

The statues depict a Council Bluffs officer and K-9, a Council Bluffs firefighter, a Pottawattamie County deputy sheriff and an Iowa state trooper.

There will also be stepping stones to honor 911 dispatchers.
