Margaret and John Berg celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Wednesday. With four children, nine grandchildren, two great grandkids and one more on the way, the couple has had a lot of family support throughout the years.
They’ve also had a lot of other marriages to learn from. The Bergs say they learned most about entering a respectful and loving relationship from their parents. Margaret says she learned a lot about John through his parents’ character.
“His father never cussed. He was a good man and very respectful. He was a good family man. And his mother was probably the best mother-in-law I could have ever asked for. That’s how I knew John was a good man for me,” says Margaret Berg.
Margaret has two siblings, a brother and sister who are also in marriages that have lasted over fifty years. The Bergs say marriage is an important milestone in their family.
"All three siblings in a family married for a total of 170 years...that's no so common anymore," says Margaret Berg.
Their children are following in their footsteps, with some of their kids in marriages that have surpassed the 30 year mark.
“That’s what we want to be for our kids. We want to be good examples for them and show them that you can survive your problems and you can get over what you thought you couldn't,” says Margaret Berg.
They say divorce was never an option for them.
“If you've got a problem you've got to work it out,” says John Berg.
The couple hopes successful and lasting marriages carry on to the next generation.
