Some Creighton students and faculty spent their Tuesday helping make thousands of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for those in need.

At the school's fitness center Thursday morning, students had planned to work in an assembly line until 5 p.m. — or whenever they ran out of supplies. The group began making the sandwiches around 9 a.m. and at noon, they had already cleared 1,000.

How to make a difference with 8,000* PB&Js

  1. Start with 600 loaves of bread.
  2. Acquire 600 pounds of peanut butter.
  3. Add 60 bottles of jelly.
  4. Form a sandwich-making assembly line for several hours.
  5. Give sandwiches to many people in need.

Creighton senior Jesus Santiago said he was eager to make a simple meal for those who don't always know where their next one is coming from.

"It makes me realize how fortunate and lucky we are especially going to Creighton," he said.

The sandwiches will go to the Open Door Mission and the Siena Francis House as part of World Kindness Day.

The event is put on by Creighton Dining and is in its third year.

Organizers say it is part of Creighton's mission to give back. Senior Wisam Najdawi said participating was an easy way to make a difference in someone's life.

"It's a nice break from class, and I'm harping on this a lot, but it's doing a good thing," he said. "So you don't have to put that much work into it, and you're able to help out the community, which is definitely something I would recommend."
