The Nebraska Democratic Party is questioning Gov. Pete Ricketts endorsement of Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential candidate. They sent out a release suggesting the governor’s support of Trump has a personal agenda.
In February, Marlene Ricketts, wife of Ameritrade founder Joe Ricketts, donated $3 million to a political Super PAC that opposes Trump.
Shortly after, Trump tweeted: “I hear the Rickets [sic] family, who own the Chicago Cubs, are secretly spending $’s against me. They better be careful, they have a lot to hide!”
Trump didn’t elaborate on what, he says, the family is hiding.
Vince Powers, the Chairperson for the Nebraska Democratic Party believes Ricketts gave into the endorsement to protect whatever the family is hiding.
“Either Trump was lying – but why would you endorse a guy that was lying? Or he made a deal saying, okay if I endorse you [Trump], you won’t spill the beans on my family. Or third, he’s just a gutless whimp who won’t defend his own family and he would endorse someone who attacked his family and there isn’t anyone else in Nebraska who would do that,” says Powers.
Ricketts says he vowed to support the party’s nominee, regardless of who that was.
“I didn’t endorse anybody in the primaries and when Mr. Trump won the presumptive nominee, it’s time for Republicans to unite, get our party together and support our nominee to get Mr. Trump elected,” says Ricketts.
In response to the Democrats’ accusations, Ricketts says “You know I don’t really thinking anything about what the Nebraskan Democratic Party says.”
