Despite a late night, Don Bacon and his supporters were energized Wednesday afternoon.
Throughout his campaign Bacon touted his decades of military experience and leadership. As a political outsider he knew he had his work cut out to defeat Democrat Brad Ashford.
“You know most incumbents get re-elected at a 90 to 95 percent rate, so you know this was an uphill battle,” said Bacon.
The congressman elect’s campaign manager Mark Dreilings says Bacon’s work ethic and passion for people gave him an edge.
“This is a people driven campaign, you don't become a people driven campaign unless a candidate really does care about getting out there and talking and working with people,” said Dreilings.
Bacon says it was a special group of supporters who gave him a leg up on the competition. Bacon believes his youth movement helped.
“It was the game changer,” said Bacon.
“I feel like we influenced a lot of voters and it really made a difference,” said a high school volunteer.
“I think he will do a great job in Congress. I think he is really going to change this country,” said another volunteer.
“If you are looking for someone outside to come in and fix something, he’s the man,” said another volunteer.
Bacon says he is ready to fix Washington. He immediately wants to have an impact on the readiness of our military. He says he will also demonstrate the courage to cut our country’s spending, help small businesses succeed and work to fix the tax code.
“I’m not hung up on having the job title, it's about making an impact,” said Bacon.
