SCHUYLER, Neb. (KMTV) — Natural gas seeped into the streets of downtown Schuyler this afternoon after a gas line ruptured.
Colfax County attorney Denise Kracl tells us the entire downtown was evacuated just after three this afternoon when construction workers busted a pipe while tearing down the old Coast-to-Coast building at 12th and B street.
Kracl says an eight square block radius from where the incident occurred was evacuated, which includes city hall, the court house, two grocery stores and a few banks.
She adds the smell of natural gas could be smelled at least three blocks from the gas line rupture.
Black Hills Energy arrived on scene and was able to fix the issue and most residents were let back in at around 4:25 PM.
Kracl says a 1 block radius will still be blocked off as crews continue to monitor the situation.
