Nebraska senator Ben Sasse is making national headlines after he publicly stated as a Republican he will not support Trump if he’s the nominee, nor will he vote for Democrat Hillary Clinton.
From that statement a new Twitter account formed called @DraftSasse urging Senator Sasse to throw his name into the presidential candidate ring, hoping that with enough support, that 3rd party candidate could come from the Cornhusker state.
@DraftSasse tweeted out, “We are collective of conservative young people who want to encourage him to run, should Trump win the nomination.”
UNO political scientist Paul Landow suggests there’s a lot of maneuvering out there amongst Republicans to defeat Trump.
“The mainstream Republicans are very unhappy but they haven't been able to do anything about it because Trump keeps winning primaries,” said Landow.
Landow said at this point, it will be hard for Republicans to put a stop to the Trump momentum.
“I think it's going to be exceedingly difficult for the Republican party to tell him he's not going to be their nominee,” said Landow.
Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts’ brother and mother have poured money into “Our Principles PAC”, a Super Political Action Committee with the goal of defeating Trump as well.
The Super PAC plans to go on a two week spending spree focusing on the states with primaries and caucuses between March 8th and March 15th.
There’s even a website www.draftsasse.com
Today Sen. Sasse’s Washington D.C. office told KMTV he’s not running. Their statement saying, “Absolutely not. I’ve got three little kids and the only job that I want...raising them…and serving Nebraskans. No way.
