One man is dead after a motorcycle chase in Council Bluffs.

According to police, an officer with Iowa Department of Transportation tried to stop two motorcycles on Big Lake Road, near the Pottawattamie County Jail around 10 p.m. Tuesday.

The motorcycles sped away from the officer down Nash Boulevard, police say.

Shortly after, the driver of a 2006 Yamaha lost control and went over a curb before hitting a fence separating the city street from the interstate. The driver was ejected from the motorcycle.

The driver was taken to Mercy Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Sgt. Darren Budd with Council Bluffs police says the driver wore a helmet.

“At this time we don't have any idea who the driver was,” Budd says. “The motorcycle is actually a stolen vehicle. So we're trying to figure out who the driver of the motorcycle was.”

Council Bluffs police is still looking for the second motorcycle rider. Anyone with information is asked to call the Traffic Unit at (712) 328-4948 or (712) 328 – STOP.
