Extended interview with Bellevue professor Rick Galusha on civil discourse

As part of a story on peace and civility in the digital age, Bellevue University professor Rick Galusha spoke to 3 News Now about how people can better learn from other opinions in today's climate.

Galusha said something they encourage at Bellevue is trying to understand why people think what they think while not trying to "win" the discussion. This is evident on social media, where people talk but are engaged with each other.

Galusha also mentioned distrust of people different than you is at an all-time high whether it be along political, racial or religious lines, which makes it harder to make a genuine connection. Galusha said people need to work to overcome the fight or flights survival tool of being anxious when dealing with someone different than themselves.
