Family of murdered teen finds peace in arrests

Posted

The families of two teens murdered earlier this week are left grieving.

17-year-old Brandon Phelps and 18-year-old James Star were shot and killed last Wednesday at the Bernie Chambers Court apartments near 26th and Burdett.

Police arrested 3 teens in connection with the shooting on Friday, a 15 year old, a 17 year old and 18 year old Warren Anderson.

Brandon Phelps' aunt, Yulonda McCroy, said her family lost a bright light.

“He was just gifted; he was taken from us far too soon, just too young.”

She said quick arrests in the case have helped the family, “Peace, peace. I can’t even imagine how his mom feels, but I do know we have some closure, and I thank God.”

The 15-year-old who was arrested is facing two counts of first degree murder, while the others are facing accessory to commit a felony.

“It’s like its getting younger, the children are getting younger,” said McCroy.

She went to the prayer walk for Phelps and Star on Friday night, now she feels it will take a collective effort to effect significant, positive change.

“I hope we can get more out to this community, reach out more.”
