OAKLAND, IA. (KMTV) A deadly bus fire continues to rock the small, tight-knit community as a federal investigation begins.

Per Twitter on Tuesday, the National Transportation Safety Board announced it will send a team to Oakland to investigate what led to the bus catching on fire.

Local investigators believe Donald Hendricks, 74, backed the bus into reverse before it landed in a nearby ditch and engulfed in flames.

16-year-old Megan Klindt was also inside, according to authorities.

Dozens gathered at a local church to help each other process the sudden loss while also remembering their lives.

Bailey Rose, a senior at Riverside High School, said Hendricks was known for supporting students.

"He'd always come to like basketball games, football games," she said. "He'd come to that stuff with us and he was a great supporter of the school.
