OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — This week, 2020 Democratic nominee for president Joe Biden chose senator Kamala Harris of California as his running mate.

Harris made history in 2016 by becoming the second black woman to be a US senator.

Saturday, the first black female senator shared her thoughts on the decision.

Female black voters helped push Biden to the top in the South Carolina primary, eventually propelling him to the nomination.

Former senator Carol Mosely Braun says Biden did right by them, picking just the third female vice president nominee in U.S. history.

"I mean, he listened to the voters, who were out there, who've been winning these elections, who've been supporting democratic candidates, who have been the most loyal constituency… even when we don't get rewarded for it, we've been the most loyal Democratic constituency in the country,” said Mosley Braun.

Senators Harris and Mosely Braun are the only two black women ever to serve in the U.S. senate.

She thinks Harris will be able to bring out not just the black vote, but several different voting blocks in 2020.

"Harris has not only African-American women having her back. But she's also got Indians, she's got the immigrant community, she's got law enforcement, she was a law enforcement official in California," said Mosley Braun.

Mosley Braun spoke to Nebraskans as both Biden and President Donald Trump will vie for Omaha’s second district, which could prove crucial if the election is close.

She is hoping those in the area don't look at the poll numbers and just assume a Biden victory.

"So we just have to make sure we do the hard work of winning elections, in spite of the efforts to shut down the post office,” said Mosley Braun.
