First grade students participate in monthly "fancy lunch"

Posted

Getting to eat lunch in the classroom is not only a treat for some Lothrop Magnet Elementary Students, it is also a teaching moment for first grade teacher Emily Pedersen.

"I actually get to converse with them while they are eating their food and teach them oh, this is what our manners look like," said first grade teacher Emily Pedersen.

Once a month, Ms. Pedersen oversees the lunch period in her classroom.  The students don't just feel special eating with their teacher, they look special.

During what they call "fancy lunch," the boys can wear ties and the girls wear jewelry.  But, today isn't just about dressing up and practicing good table manners, it is also about learning to be a good listener and a good friend.

"They get to see what it looks like to talk with someone while they are eating and get to know them more and have friendly conversations," said Pedersen.
