OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — Every time Brenna Maher looks at her son Nate, she sees her husband.
"He tried to find the joy in anything and everything," said Maher.
Nate is the youngest gold star kid to travel to Washington, D.C. for this year's Purple Heart Honor Flight.
The older Nate gets, the more questions he has for his mother about the man he never got to meet. On Monday, April 11, 2011, Nate's father, Sgt. Brent Matthew Maher died while serving in Afghanistan.
Brenna answers every question Nate has about his father as best she can, but words can only explain so much.
"There's honor and there's duty to country, but how do you explain those to a child?" said Brenna.
Every year, the questions will get harder, but Brenna hopes this trip will help them both get the answers they need.
"Hopefully when the time is right, I'll have the right words," said Brenna.
