Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zooand Aquarium’s Owen Sea Lion Pavilion welcomes their latest addition a cute little sea lion pup. The pup was born on Saturday, June 17. The pup and its mother are currently on display with the pup’s father, 12-year-old Chino, at the Owen Sea Lion Pavilion. Two other sea lions, including the pup’s aunt, Gemini, are also on display. You could say it’s a family affair.
A large amount of water was drained from the pool in preparation for the birth of the pup. It will stay at this level until the pup has learned to swim in deeper water.
Mothers begin teaching their pups how to swim as early as a few days old by pulling them into the water for short periods gradually going deeper and deeper.
Sea lion keepers will choose several possible names for the pup, which will be available at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium’s Facebook page. The public will be able to vote for their favorite name from Monday, June 26 through Monday, July 3. The pup’s name will be announced through a Facebook Live video on Tuesday, July 4.
