Husker Heroes: Nebraska athletes, those with special needs make memories together

Posted

More than 300 special needs individuals and their guests from across the state were able to hang out with Husker student athletes Sunday at Memorial Stadium.

The Husker Heroes outreach event is designed for individuals with disabilities and their families to interact and play games with Husker athletes.

Student athletes say the event is mutually beneficial and provides a memorable evening for their guests, especially since many can't come to games due to sensory issues and special needs.

"It’s just such a great opportunity for them to have this social event, where they can get out and something catered for them and their needs," said Kathy Martinez of O.N.E. Coalition, which sponsors the event.

The Husker Heroes outreach event was started eight years ago by O.N.E. Coalition and Tom Osborne.

This year's event was a record-breaking year, drawing more than 1,600 people.
