Officials with the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility said they stopped an attempted escape by an inmate on Tuesday.
Authorities say that the inmate never left his assigned housing unit; never came close to approaching the facility perimeter; and the public was never in any immediate danger.
A NCYF unit caseworker failed to properly conduct a formal count allowing the inmate to hide in a common area until he was found by another staff member and secured in the restrictive housing unit.
Officials added that an investigation into the incident is underway and neither the name of the inmate nor the staff members will be released at this time.
Our mission is to keep people safe,” Scott Frakes, NDCS director said. “That starts with following security procedures to the letter and never cutting corners.
Officials added that the responsibility they carry is too great for there to be any other option. It should not take incidents like the recent LCC escapes and this to remind their employees how important their work is.
"Failure to adhere to basic security practices will not be tolerated and it will end now,” he said.
